Selling While Scared and Other Bass Ackwards Pursuits

I started selling back in the year 2002 when I worked helping a computer consulting company spread the word about their business.

My first job with them was working with their clients, teaching them about computers. And then, one day, I was invited to help them get more clients.

I packed my car with tons of mouse pads, pens, flyers and other collateral promoting the company and set out into the desert of Arizona to get busy!

And for the next few weeks, I drove around, consistently coming up with a great reason each day NOT to talk to a single human.

An entire summer went by with all of that stuff in my car. I was scared to death of selling to humans.

The fear came from two things:

  • The first was a fundamental misunderstanding about who I was.
  • The second was a fundamental misunderstanding about what it means to SELL.

Selling is not controlling other humans. It is not conflict or controversy. It is not the sly manipulation of human behavior to create a specific result. Only in the world of the sales hack is that the definition.

Only the weakest salespeople try to control others. More often than not, that approach creates either a silent disaster or a loud one.

  • Selling in person with this approach makes people run away.
  • Selling in print this way turns people off completely.

Controlling the sale is not an effective way to offer what you have to the world.

Controlling YOU, however, IS an effective way to create sales.

Control your mind, control your process, control your clarity, control your level of empathy, control your emotional attachment, control your understanding of the problems experienced by those you serve.

THAT’S a form of control that goes a long way…one that can be extremely productive.

As is usually the case, business lessons cross over to become life lessons and vice versa.

Apparently, there are lessons everywhere, just laying around waiting for us to pick them up!

Control in LIFE is not a smart use of energy either. Attempts at control broadcast to the world that you lack a connection to something deep within yourself that would make that desire for control irrelevant to the quality of your experience.

The desire for controlling that which is outside of yourself is a byproduct of NEED.

Even more, it broadcasts to the world that you are scared.

And scared people are hard to buy from. Primarily because those they seek to serve can feel the fear. And humans are wired to run from things that generate that vibration.

Take the charade that’s happening across the socialism media platforms with anyone who dares to speak their mind if it runs contrary to the directives of Satan’s Borg.

Censoring and “cancelling” is all they’ve got. That’s the method by which they seek to control. But just like the bully in the school yard who is always one day closer to having his deep insecurities laid bare for all to see, anyone who isn’t in a coma can see that “control” of this variety shows complete weakness.

Giving up your desire to control anything other than YOU is a big step on the road to freedom.

It also makes you better at selling.

When you control things that are actually within your control, a sense of peace and calm becomes your normal state of being…no matter WHAT is happening “out there.”
