It’s been about 20 years since I was first introduced to the idea of working ON your business instead of just IN your business.
At the time, I thought that was an exciting revelation! Even though I barely had a business, I jumped right in and did all of the exercises to strategize the many systems I’d have in my business as it grew.
Back then, I had no idea that the “on, not just in” strategy is even more powerful when you apply it to life.
I spent the first 30 years of my existence IN my life. I was in the movie, playing my character, without realizing what was going on beyond the boundaries of the film set. I didn’t even know I had been cast to play the starring role in my own big budget cinematic production!
After my inner truth started cracking through the shell of Jason 1.0 and my life started to fall apart from the inside out (not fun!), only then did the Universe send me someone to help.
This being served as the messenger to explain there was a big part of ME living outside the movie set and that, perhaps I should get to know that being in an effort to understand a little more about what the hell was going on in this reality.
Life is different when you learn to walk through the experience with part of your awareness IN it and part of your awareness ON it.
You walk as the witness and the one being witnessed.
Why is this powerful?
Because the witness exists only in the present moment, where all of the power of the Universe is made available.
- The witness can BE.
- The one being witnessed can DO.
Embracing both, at the very same time, opens a dimension of living that few get to experience.
- If you’re looking for safety, you can find it in being.
- If you’re looking for excitement, you can find it in doing.
- If you’re looking for wholeness, it is available in the coming together of the doer and the one who stands as witness to the doer.
When you develop the ability to step out of the flow of the doing and also watch from a distance as the witness, how you see changes in dramatic ways.
For a long time, I thought I was lost. But I was just stuck in the world of the doer. I was looking at the journey only from that perspective. I was not able to see enough of the fuller picture to understand.
When you can watch over yourself and stand witness to your own discovery of the adventure that is life, not only do you realize how much bigger than your character you really are, you can also stop trying to control the script as a character in the movie.
You can simply watch, without resistance, as the magical story unfolds.
The doer can play his part, and the witness can hold space for the journey.
